Iraq’s National Security Service (NSS) has announced the arrest of Ajaj Ahmed Hardan, a senior figure from the former regime and one of the country’s most wanted fugitives. Hardan, also known by the alias “Hajaj Nugra Salman”, was captured in Muthanna Governorate following a covert intelligence operation that lasted over six months.
In a statement released on Friday, the NSS confirmed that the operation was carried out in coordination with the Southern Saladin Security Directorate. The arrest marks a significant breakthrough in ongoing efforts to bring former regime officials to justice.
Hardan previously held multiple security positions across Iraq during the Ba’athist era, including posts in the Rumaitha, Najmi, Hilal, Busayya, and Muthanna sectors. Most notably, he served as security officer at the notorious Nugra Salman Prison, a site historically associated with human rights abuses.
The NSS alleges that Hardan was directly involved in a series of crimes against humanity, including the torture, execution, and rape of hundreds of Iraqi citizens—particularly targeting Kurdish civilians who were forcibly relocated to Muthanna under the former regime. He is also accused of participating in the burial of victims in mass graves.
According to the statement, Hardan’s family had long claimed he was deceased in an apparent attempt to evade justice. However, through extensive intelligence gathering and cross-referencing of prior testimonies, authorities were able to locate and apprehend him in Saladin Governorate.
Following the arrest, judicial approvals were obtained and victim statements recorded. The accused has since been handed over to the relevant investigative authorities to face legal proceedings.
In its closing remarks, the NSS reaffirmed its commitment to accountability, stating: “The hand of justice will continue to reach those responsible for spilling innocent blood. Time shall offer no refuge to those who flee from rightful punishment.”
