The rapporteur of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) bloc in the Iraqi parliament has called on the country’s top judicial authorities to take firm action against those responsible for the Anfal crimes.
MP Karwan Yarwais confirmed to PUKMEDIA that he has sent two official letters—one to the President of the Supreme Judicial Council and another to the Chief Prosecutor—seeking clarity and decisive steps on the matter.
“The first letter was to the President of the Supreme Judicial Council regarding the measures taken against the perpetrators of the Anfal crimes,” Yarwais said. “We asked whether any legal steps had been pursued following the conclusion of the trials and the issuance of verdicts convicting them.”
He added that the letter also requested clarification on the status of the cases and whether the rulings of the Iraqi Supreme Criminal Court had been implemented.
The second letter, addressed to the Chief Prosecutor, called for the issuance of directives to follow up on all files and cases related to the Anfal crimes—both within Iraq’s judicial system and through international cooperation. “This is essential to ensure justice for the victims and their families, particularly in enforcing the decisions of the Iraqi Supreme Criminal Court,” Yarwais stressed.
