A public ceremony was held in Sinjar district on Wednesday to lay to rest the remains of Yazidi martyrs killed by ISIS in 2014.
Nobel Peace Prize laureate Nadia Murad attended the ceremony. The bodies of 22 martyrs from Sinjar—including two of Nadia Murad’s brothers—were returned to their homes for burial.
Nawzad Shingali, deputy head of the Shingal Organisations Centre of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), told PUKMEDIA: “The bodies of 22 people who were martyred inside a school in Kocho on 15 August 2014 were returned to their homes after their identities were confirmed and DNA tests conducted in Baghdad. Two of the martyrs are the brothers of UN Goodwill Ambassador Nadia Murad.”
On 3 August 2014, a major humanitarian disaster struck Kocho, Sinjar district, when ISIS fighters occupied the area, killing a large number of civilians. These bodies form part of the victims of the terrorist acts committed against the Yazidi community.
The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan has consistently supported the Yazidi community. Since the Sinjar tragedy, it has stood by the Yazidis, defended their rights, and made significant sacrifices. Today, it continues to uphold and protect their rights.
