Iraq's Ministry of Migration and Displacement announced on Sunday, 17 August 2025, that the number of internally displaced persons (IDP) camps across Iraq has been reduced from 172 to just 22.
Karim al-Nouri, Undersecretary of the Ministry, told Iraq's state media (INA) that there are certain obstacles hindering the voluntary return of displaced people in Duhok and Erbil to their areas, including destroyed homes, fears of limited job opportunities, and ongoing tribal disputes.
He explained that all camps, except the ones in Erbil and Duhok, have now been closed, with the two provinces currently hosting around 22 camps sheltering approximately 18,000 families.
“The number of camps once stood at about 172, but thanks to the efforts made, this figure has decreased dramatically. The majority of displaced persons, particularly those from Shingal (Sinjar), are eager to return,” Nouri added.
While the Ministry has not set a specific timeframe for resolving the displacement file, Nouri stressed that efforts are ongoing to bring it to a close as swiftly as possible.
