Massive Fires Sweep Through Halabja Forests, Affecting 500 Hectares.
Civil Defence forces, supported by citizen volunteers, have successfully brought under control the large-scale fires that swept through forests in Halabja Governorate after extensive efforts.
Brigadier General Abdeen Abdul Rahman, Director of Civil Defence in Halabja, told PUKMEDIA that the fires had devastated vast areas of woodland, with strong winds complicating efforts despite reinforcements arriving from Sulaymaniyah.
“The fires affected more than 500 hectares of forests and orchards, destroying farmland in six villages and claiming the lives of two residents of the governorate,” Brigadier General Abdul Rahman confirmed.
He explained that numerous firefighting teams, alongside municipal workers and aviation units from Sulaymaniyah, took part in tackling the blaze. Dozens of local volunteers also joined the efforts, highlighting the community’s determination to protect their land and livelihoods.
Brigadier General Abdeen Abdul Rahman said that, after extensive efforts, the teams, with everyone’s help, had managed to control the fire and were now closely monitoring the area to prevent similar incidents from occurring again.
