Iraq and Malaysia Bolster Ties Amid Shared Commitment to Peace and Development

As part of ongoing efforts to enhance relations between Iraq and Malaysia, Iraqi President Abdullatif Jamal Rashid welcomed Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Rural and Regional Development, Ahmed Zahid Hamidi, along with his accompanying delegation, at Baghdad Palace on Sunday, 24 August 2025.
According to a statement by the Iraqi Presidency, President Rashid extended a warm reception and conveyed his greetings to Malaysia’s President, underscoring the importance of deepening bilateral relations in ways that serve the mutual interests of both nations. He affirmed that “Iraq’s approach to international engagement is rooted in mutual respect and in building cooperation across diverse sectors.”
The statement added that the discussions focused on closer coordination regarding regional and international issues, with both sides agreeing that collective efforts are essential to addressing shared challenges.
On regional matters, President Rashid praised Malaysia’s longstanding support for the Palestinian cause, highlighting its solidarity with the Palestinian people in pursuit of justice and their legitimate rights. He stressed: “The ongoing crisis in Gaza demands urgent international intervention. Arab and Islamic nations, alongside the wider international community, must unite to end the aggression, alleviate civilian suffering, provide humanitarian assistance, and strengthen healthcare services in the region.”
Deputy Prime Minister Hamidi conveyed greetings from Malaysia’s leadership and reiterated his country’s strong commitment to Iraq. He stated: “Malaysia is eager to expand cooperation with Iraq, confident that deeper ties will bring significant benefits to both our nations and peoples.”
The meeting reaffirmed the shared determination of Iraq and Malaysia to broaden their partnership, with both leaders expressing optimism about advancing cooperation and strengthening bilateral relations in the years ahead.
