Amnesty International has uncovered compelling evidence that Syrian government forces and affiliated militias carried out the extrajudicial execution of at least 46 Druze civilians in Suwayda on 15–16 July 2025.
The investigation, based on verified video footage, eyewitness testimony, and digital analysis, revealed that armed men in military and security uniforms executed unarmed civilians in homes, a public square, a school, a hospital, and a ceremonial hall.
“These killings constitute crimes under international law. The Syrian government must launch a prompt, independent, and transparent investigation, ensuring perpetrators are brought to justice in fair trials – without recourse to the death penalty,” said Diana Semaan, Amnesty International’s Syria Researcher.
The executions took place amid clashes in southern Syria between Druze armed groups and Bedouin fighters, alongside Israeli airstrikes on government positions. Despite government claims of restoring order, troops withdrew after two days, leaving dozens dead.
Amnesty International confirmed that some perpetrators wore official insignia and used Ministry of Interior vehicles. Survivors described sectarian abuse and the humiliation of Druze religious figures. Among those killed was a hospital medical worker executed on-site.
The Syrian government announced an inquiry but has provided no credible updates. Amnesty International has urged Damascus to ensure accountability and cooperate with international mechanisms.
