Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has condemned recent Russian missile strikes targeting Ukrainian universities and railway infrastructure, describing the attacks as having “no military purpose whatsoever.” Speaking on 17 September 2025, Zelenskyy called on the international community to hold Moscow accountable for targeting civilian sites, which have caused significant damage and disrupted critical transport networks.
In addition to condemning the attacks, Zelensky signalled Ukraine’s readiness to consider a ceasefire, expressing hope that U.S. President Donald Trump could facilitate negotiations. However, he acknowledged that Moscow has repeatedly rejected external pressure and is unlikely to agree to any immediate truce.
Zelensky also warned that Russia is preparing for two more large-scale offensive campaigns, despite previous setbacks earlier this year. He emphasised that Russian President Vladimir Putin appears unwilling to engage in meaningful peace talks, leaving Ukraine to rely on international support and strategic defence measures.
“These attacks underscore the urgency of international action to protect civilians and uphold Ukraine’s sovereignty,” Zelenskyy said. His remarks reflect Kyiv’s ongoing effort to seek both accountability for Russian aggression and potential diplomatic avenues to halt the escalating conflict.
