President of the Republic of Iraq, Abdullatif Jamal Rashid, held a series of high-level engagements on the sidelines of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), reaffirming Iraq’s commitment to peace, partnership, and sustainable development.
Meetings with Azerbaijan and Portugal
At UN headquarters, President Rashid met separately with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
With President Aliyev, discussions centred on strengthening bilateral ties and enhancing cooperation across political, economic, and regional spheres. Both leaders emphasised the importance of coordination at the United Nations to promote peace and stability.
During his meeting with President Rebelo de Sousa, President Rashid highlighted Iraq’s policy of openness and partnership with countries worldwide. He praised Portugal’s support for the Palestinian cause, stressing the need for continued international solidarity to uphold Palestinian rights and end aggression. President Rebelo de Sousa reaffirmed Portugal’s commitment to deepening ties with Iraq, particularly in the areas of reconstruction and development.
Global Development Initiative Address
In his address to the High-Level Meeting of the Global Development Initiative, President Rashid warned that regional and international tensions, compounded by ongoing wars, continue to undermine social and economic development. He called for urgent international efforts to end hostilities, noting that every delay costs lives and generates new crises.
The President underlined Iraq’s transformation, from decades of dictatorship and conflict to a country now enjoying greater security and stability. He pointed to promising investment opportunities across energy, transportation, construction, agriculture, industry, and tourism, stressing Iraq’s commitment to economic diversification and reform.
President Rashid also addressed Iraq’s environmental and climate challenges, including water scarcity, rising temperatures, and rapid population growth. He urged greater international cooperation to tackle these pressures and reaffirmed Iraq’s readiness to work with states, organisations, and agencies to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
Senior Officials in Attendance
The meetings were attended by senior Iraqi and Kurdistan Regional Government officials, including Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region Qubad Talabani, and other senior advisers and ministers.
