President Mam Jalal.
In 2013, researcher Ammar Abbas Mahmoud submitted a master’s thesis entitled “Political Thought of Jalal Talabani” at one of Cairo's universities, under the supervision of Professor Majida Ali Saleh, to obtain a degree in political science.
The thesis examines in depth the intellectual framework and political vision of the late President Mam Jalal or Jalal Talabani, presenting a scientific and detailed study of his ideas. Among the main themes explored are: nationalism, socialism and democratic vision, liberalism and the democratic process, as well as President Mam Jalal’s perspective on the unity of Iraqi territory and his approach to understanding and resolving the Kurdish question.
According to the study, President Mam Jalal, as a political leader, represented a unique synthesis of several ideological currents. This fusion established a distinctive school of political thought, a new method of struggle, and a novel model of resistance.
The researcher identifies three core intellectual logics within Talabani’s political philosophy:
1. Nationalism – rooted in Kurdish national identity and rights.
2. Socialism and Democracy – reflecting contemporary social democratic values.
3. The Path of Modern Democracy – advocating democratic processes as a means of resolving conflict.
In terms of political practice, the thesis highlights President Mam Jalal’s consistent efforts to balance Kurdish national aspirations with the preservation of Iraq’s unity. He maintained that Kurds must play an active role within the Iraqi political system while simultaneously safeguarding their national rights.
The study concludes that President Mam Jalal’s political thought can be characterised as a distinctive blend of nationalism, social democracy, and a commitment to democratic solutions for Iraq’s most pressing challenges.
