Leader of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Sanae Takaichi reacts as she receives applause after being elected as prime minister.
Hardline conservative Sanae Takaichi has been elected as Japan’s first female prime minister, breaking the country’s long-standing gender barrier and setting the stage for a more right-leaning political era.
An ally of the late former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and a self-professed admirer of Britain’s Margaret Thatcher, Takaichi secured 237 votes in the lower house election to select Japan’s next premier — a majority in the 465-seat chamber. Her historic win represents a major milestone in a nation where men have traditionally dominated political leadership.
Takaichi’s victory follows a coalition agreement reached on Monday between her ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and the right-wing Japan Innovation Party (Ishin).
