UK Home Office Outlines New Asylum and Human Rights Measures

The British Government has unveiled a sweeping reform of the country’s asylum system, aiming to tighten controls on migration and restrict the interpretation of human rights laws.

Interior Minister Shabana Mahmood said the changes would make it easier to deport individuals who enter the UK illegally while ensuring the asylum system is “fair, efficient and cannot be exploited.” The reforms focus on the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), particularly Articles 3 and 8, which protect against inhuman treatment and safeguard the right to family life.

Key measures include:

1-Narrowing family life protections under Article 8 to immediate relatives.

2-Reviewing Article 3 to clarify what constitutes inhuman or degrading treatment.

3-Making refugee status temporary, with regular reviews.

4-Extending the waiting period for permanent settlement up to 20 years.

5-Limiting the number and duration of appeals.

6-Reducing mandatory support for certain asylum seekers.

7-Expediting deportation for foreign nationals with criminal convictions.

Human rights groups have criticised the reforms, warning they could endanger vulnerable people fleeing persecution. Sile Reynolds, Head of Asylum Advocacy at Freedom from Torture, told Reuters: “Stripping away protections that prevent people being sent back to their torturers is not who we are as a country.”

The shake-up comes amid rising public concern over migration and small-boat crossings from France, and the Government has emphasised that the UK will continue to uphold its international obligations.
