On the occasion of PUK Martyrs’ Day, observed annually on 21 November, the Political Bureau of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) issued a statement reaffirming its commitment to following the path of the righteous martyrs until the objectives for which they gave their lives are fully achieved.
The statement reads: “PUK Martyrs’ Day is a day of remembrance for a history steeped in sacrifice. It embodies the principle of ‘Live a little, but with dignity,’ as exemplified by martyrs such as Shihab Sheikh Nuri, Jafaar Abdulwahid, and Anwar Zorab, who led the caravan of sacrifice, redemption, and martyrdom.”
The PUK’s struggle over the past 50 years, including the recent revolution, has been marked by continuous sacrifices. Not a single day has passed without the party losing members in defence of nationalism, democracy, and the freedom of Kurdistan.
On this anniversary, we pay homage to our comrades who faced execution with courage, sang anthems and slogans in the trenches, and confronted the enemy’s bullets, giving their lives for the people and homeland. We reaffirm our commitment to their path of struggle.
The history of the PUK’s martyrs — from the early days of the movement, through the Peshmerga’s resistance, the Kurdish uprising, the liberation of Iraq, and the fight against ISIS and other terrorist groups — is one of pride and honour. Our hope remains that our people will no longer be compelled to shed their blood, and that the PUK will continue its struggle and sacrifices without relent.
To honour the martyrs, the PUK asserts its duty to dedicate all efforts towards improving the living standards of the families of its righteous martyrs and the people of Kurdistan at large. We will follow the path for which they gave their lives and persist in our struggle until all objectives are realised.
A salute to the souls of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan’s martyrs and all the martyrs of our people.
A tribute of pride to their families.
