U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Chinese President Xi Jinping told U.S. President Donald Trump in a phone call on Monday that Taiwan’s “return to China” is a fundamental component of the post-World War Two international order, China’s state news agency Xinhua reported.
“China and the United States once fought side by side against fascism and militarism, and should now work together to safeguard the outcomes of World War Two,” Xi was quoted as saying.
A White House official confirmed the call but did not provide further details.
China views Taiwan as part of its territory and has not ruled out the use of force to bring the island under its control. Taiwan’s government, however, rejects Beijing’s sovereignty claims and insists that only the island’s people can determine their future.
The phone call comes amid China’s most serious diplomatic rift with Japan in years after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said that a hypothetical Chinese attack on Taiwan could trigger a military response from Tokyo.
Xi and Trump last met on 30 October in South Korea following months of economic tension fuelled by Trump’s tariff measures. Since then, China has resumed purchasing U.S. soybeans and rolled back expanded restrictions on rare earth exports, while the United States has reduced tariffs on Chinese goods by 10%.
Xi said bilateral ties have “stabilised and improved” since the Seoul meeting. “The facts again show that cooperation benefits both sides, while confrontation harms both,” he told Trump, urging the two nations to sustain constructive momentum and broaden cooperation.
The two leaders also discussed the war in Ukraine. Xi reiterated China’s support for “all efforts conducive to peace” and called on all parties to work to narrow their differences.
