Reports have emerged that senior officials from the United States and Russia have held discreet discussions in Abu Dhabi in an attempt to revive a framework for peace in Ukraine. The talks, led by US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, represent one of Washington’s most serious diplomatic efforts in months to halt the conflict.
According to multiple international outlets, the Abu Dhabi meeting followed earlier discussions in Geneva between American and Ukrainian officials. Those talks focused on refining a proposed peace plan, initially containing 28 points and now reportedly reduced to around 19. Although details remain confidential, sources suggest the proposal includes restrictions on Ukraine’s military development, a ban on NATO membership, and potential territorial compromises — issues that Kyiv views with significant concern.
The timing of the negotiations has added to the tension. As talks began, Russia launched new missile strikes on Kyiv, killing and injuring civilians and underscoring the fragile backdrop against which diplomacy is unfolding. European leaders, particularly in France and Germany, have publicly warned against any settlement that could be interpreted as forcing Ukraine into an unfavourable or unilateral concession.
The Kremlin has not formally confirmed the meeting, but neither has it denied the reports. Further rounds of discussions are expected, though the prospects of a breakthrough remain uncertain.
For now, the talks indicate that the US and Russia are at least exploring the possibility of a negotiated end to the war. Whether these efforts will produce a credible, balanced agreement — or simply mark another failed attempt at diplomacy — will become clearer in the weeks ahead.
