Khor Mor gas field in Chamchamal, Sulaymaniyah.
Hoshyar Zebari, a member of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) Political Bureau, described the attack on the Khor Mor gas field as a dangerous escalation by armed groups targeting the Kurdistan Region.
Speaking to Dijlah TV, Zebari warned that the timing of the assault was particularly alarming, coming during the post-election period and the ongoing efforts to form a new government.
He emphasised that the Khor Mor field is administered by the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and stressed that no Kurdish party has any interest in such an attack.
“There is no basis to blame any Kurdish party,” he said. “The entire Kurdistan Region has been targeted. These armed groups do not distinguish between parties; they are attacking the region’s economic interests and critical infrastructure.”
He firmly rejected claims that the attack was linked to internal political tensions within the Kurdistan Region, calling such allegations an attempt to “divert attention” and mislead public opinion.
“There is no Kurdish interest in this attack,” he stated. “Those who promote these narratives do so simply to distract from the real perpetrators.”
Regarding the identity of the groups behind the attack, Zebari revealed that the Kurdish political leadership had prior information.
“Three to four days before the attack, we received intelligence that preparations were underway to strike several economic targets in the Kurdistan Region,” he said.
Zebari added that the attack was carried out using Grad rockets and drones.
“We know the origin of the attack, and it is controlled by armed groups—more than one group,” he noted.
