China’s Ministry of Defence announced late on Saturday that China and Russia conducted their third round of joint anti-missile exercises on Russian territory in early December.
In a statement published on the ministry’s website, Beijing said the drills were not directed at any third party, nor were they a response to current international developments. Instead, the exercises form part of ongoing cooperation between the two countries on missile defence and strategic coordination.
China and Russia held talks on missile defence and strategic stability in November and conducted artillery and anti-submarine exercises in the Sea of Japan in August.
Beijing and Moscow entered a “no-limits” strategic partnership shortly before Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, committing to regular joint military exercises to strengthen interoperability between their armed forces.
Both countries have expressed concern over U.S. President Donald Trump’s plans to build a so-called “golden dome” missile shield, as well as his stated intention to resume nuclear weapons testing after more than three decades.
