Ms. Parez Omar wins Sinjar Human Rights Award.
On Wednesday, 10 December 2025, the House of Coexistence in Sinjar hosted the official ceremony for the Sinjar Human Rights Award 2025, where winners were announced and honoured. One of the awards was presented to an activist from the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK).
The nominations included 51 candidates from various countries, overseen by a specialised human rights committee.
The National Women of Courage Prize, dedicated to women’s rights defenders, was awarded to Ms Parez Omar, a human rights activist and senior member of the PUK. She has worked with several organisations since the beginning of the genocide, helping deliver aid to displaced people in camps in Kurdistan Region and Rojava (West Kurdistan), and accompanying volunteer youth teams in the mountains.
Ms Omar and a group of women first proposed compensation for Yazidi survivors. The idea for a survivors’ law was initially developed when they met former President Dr Fuad Masoum in 2016.
In her acceptance speech, Ms Omar said: “Eleven years after the displacement, I urge all parties to have the courage to end the displacement crisis and help the Yazidis return to Sinjar. It is shameful that, after eleven years, the dream of a displaced Yazidi is to replace their tent instead of rebuilding their home.”
She expressed gratitude to everyone who supported the project and the passage of the Yazidi Survivors Law in the Iraqi parliament, particularly the PUK bloc, and extended special thanks to Ms Hero Ibrahim Ahmed, Ms Shanaz Ibrahim Ahmed, and Ms Kafia Sulaiman for their significant support.
