Iraqi First Lady: Conclusion UN’s Mission in Iraq Marks New Phase for Boosting Cooperation

Iraqi First Lady Shanaz Ibrahim Ahmed and Mohamed Al-Hassan, the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Iraq.
Iraqi First Lady Shanaz Ibrahim Ahmed met with Mohamed Al-Hassan, the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Iraq and Head of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), in Baghdad to mark the conclusion of his mandate.
The meeting, held at Baghdad Palace, provided an opportunity to reflect on UNAMI’s role in supporting Iraq’s political process, elections, human rights, and post-conflict recovery.
According to a statement by the Iraqi Presidency, the First Lady expressed her pleasure at receiving Al-Hassan and commended his efforts throughout his tenure, noting his contributions to advancing the mission’s diplomatic objectives and areas of shared priority.
She also affirmed that the conclusion of UNAMI’s mandate represents a new phase of cooperation between Iraq and the United Nations, particularly in the fields of development, the economy, environment, culture and human rights.
“The conclusion of the United Nations Mission’s work in Iraq marks a new phase for enhancing cooperation and joint action with the United Nations,” the First Lady said, emphasising the importance of continued collaboration across these key sectors.
She also praised UNAMI’s support for the political process and electoral efforts, its role in strengthening human rights institutions, rebuilding national capacities, addressing climate challenges and encouraging joint efforts to ensure the return of displaced persons to their areas of origin.
For his part, Al-Hassan reaffirmed that the United Nations’ will continue to support Iraq on its path toward peace and development. He also expressed his appreciation for the First Lady’s efforts, particularly in the humanitarian field and in preserving cultural heritage, noting their importance in strengthening national identity.
