The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity confirmed on Tuesday, 23 December 2025, a complete halt in gas supplies from Iran and announced the activation of contingency measures to mitigate the impact on national power generation until imports resume.
Ahmed Moussa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Electricity, said in a statement received by PUKMEDIA: “Iranian gas supplies have been completely suspended, resulting in a shortfall of between 4,000 and 4,500 megawatts on the national grid. This has necessitated the shutdown of certain generating units and load-shedding at others, with consequent effects on hours of electricity supply.”
Moussa added that the Ministry had received an official telegram from the Iranian side notifying Baghdad of the cessation of gas flows due to unforeseen circumstances. “In response, the Ministry has switched to domestically produced alternative fuels, in co-ordination with the Ministry of Oil, to sustain power plant operations,” he said.
He stressed that production remains under control and that most power stations continue to operate, notwithstanding the constraints caused by the gas shortage. “The Ministry has prepared for peak winter demand through ongoing maintenance, upgrades and expansion works at generation facilities,” he noted. “We are working closely with the Ministry of Oil to meet domestic requirements until imported gas supplies are restored.”
