Several European countries have introduced stricter rules on the financial assistance provided to asylum seekers, reflecting a wider shift toward tighter migration policies.
Under the EU Migration and Asylum Pact, member states are encouraged to link financial support more closely to legal status and cooperation with asylum procedures, particularly for applicants whose claims are rejected. While the EU does not set benefit amounts, it allows countries greater flexibility in how assistance is delivered.
At the national level, countries such as Germany have replaced cash payments with restricted payment cards, limiting cash withdrawals and overseas transfers. Other states have reduced allowances or shifted support toward housing and in-kind assistance.
Governments say the measures aim to control costs and strengthen asylum systems, while rights groups warn they could increase hardship for vulnerable applicants. Overall, analysts note a growing European trend toward more conditional and controlled financial support for asylum seekers.
