Venezuela’s acting president, Delcy Rodríguez, has appealed for a balanced and respectful relationship with the United States following the arrest of President Nicolás Maduro by US forces, in what she described as a serious violation of Venezuelan sovereignty.

Rodríguez, who was appointed acting president by Venezuela’s Constitutional Chamber after Maduro’s removal, has taken a notably conciliatory tone in recent statements. In a message published on social media, she called on the US government to work with her administration on a “cooperation agenda aimed at shared development” under international law and to promote lasting peaceful coexistence between the two nations.

Her remarks came after an initial period of strong criticism in which Rodríguez condemned the US operation as a violation of Venezuela’s sovereignty and demanded proof that Maduro and his wife remain alive. Venezuelan officials in Caracas also called for Maduro’s release and denounced the operation as illegal.

The shift in Rodríguez’s public tone follows threats from US President Donald Trump, who has warned of serious consequences if Venezuela’s interim leadership does not cooperate with Washington. Rodríguez’s appeal for respectful dialogue appears aimed at navigating this growing diplomatic pressure while asserting Venezuela’s national dignity.

Rodríguez has also emphasised unity within Venezuela, urging citizens to remain calm and uphold the country’s sovereignty amid profound political uncertainty. Her administration has faced the dual challenges of asserting legitimacy and managing internal affairs as Maduro remains in US custody.
