The United States and Venezuela are holding talks on the potential resumption of Venezuelan oil exports to the U.S., Reuters reported, citing sources familiar with the matter.
According to the report, the discussions centre on allowing Venezuelan crude oil — much of which is currently in storage or stranded due to sanctions — to be shipped to refineries along the U.S. Gulf Coast. These facilities are technically equipped to process Venezuela’s heavy crude, which was widely imported prior to the imposition of U.S. sanctions.
Sources told Reuters that the talks come amid broader U.S. efforts to manage energy supplies and stabilise global oil markets. However, no formal agreement has been reached, and any move to resume exports would require legal mechanisms or exemptions under the current sanctions regime.
Neither the U.S. nor Venezuelan governments have publicly commented on the report, and Venezuela’s state oil company, PDVSA, has not issued an official statement.
While relations between Washington and Caracas remain tense, the discussions represent a notable development in bilateral engagement after years of limited diplomatic and economic interaction. The talks remain exploratory, with no timeline announced for a final decision.
