IDPs in Kobani.
The city of Kobani in western Kurdistan (Rojava) has now been under siege for 23 days by factions aligned with the Syrian Interim Government, preventing the delivery of essential supplies and basic necessities. The ongoing blockade has intensified the humanitarian crisis, severely affecting residents and displaced persons sheltering in the city.
Despite continued meetings between delegations from Kobani’s city administration and representatives of the Interim Government, as outlined in the January 29 agreement, no resolution has been reached to end the siege. Authorities say the stalemate is prolonging the suffering of civilians and complicating efforts to provide urgent aid.
The blockade has resulted in acute shortages of medicine, baby formula, food, and other essential items, creating increasingly dire living conditions. The humanitarian situation is further strained by the presence of over 200,000 displaced people in the city, who are currently accommodated in approximately 70 shelters after fleeing attacks in surrounding areas.
In a small relief amid the crisis, the Kobani Electricity Authority announced on Monday that technical teams had repaired cables damaged in recent attacks, restoring power to the city. Nevertheless, the ongoing siege continues to place significant pressure on the city’s resources and the well-being of its inhabitants.
Humanitarian organisations have called for immediate action to allow aid into Kobani and alleviate the suffering of residents and displaced communities caught in the blockade.
