Justice Minister Khalid Shwani.
Dr Khalid Shwani, Minister of Justice in Iraq’s Federal Government, has confirmed that ISIS militants transferred from Syria to Iraq will not be moved to prisons in the Kurdistan Region. Instead, they are being tried by a specialised judicial body established to handle their cases.
Speaking in a press statement, Dr Shwani clarified that “federal prisons located within the Kurdistan Region, such as Suse and Chamchamal, are designated for criminal offenders. ISIS members are classified as terrorists and are being held in a high-security prison in Baghdad.”
He revealed that the total number of ISIS prisoners transferred from Syria to Iraq has reached 5,046, representing around 50 different nationalities. “This number could rise to 6,000,” he added.
The Minister of Justice emphasised that all transferred prisoners will face trials in Iraq under a specialised judicial framework. He noted that legal procedures are being conducted in coordination with the countries of the prisoners’ nationalities.
Shwani also highlighted ongoing diplomatic efforts with the Global Coalition to facilitate the repatriation of foreign ISIS prisoners to their countries of origin, ensuring that both justice and international cooperation are upheld.
