The name of Kurdish Yazidi activist and journalist Duzen Tekkal has increasingly emerged as a prominent voice in international discussions on justice and genocide, following her influential role in bringing the Yazidi cause to the forefront of the 62nd Munich Security Conference.
At the invitation of Mazloum Abdi and Ilham Ahmed, Tekkal managed to contribute to sparking a significant debate within the conference, transforming the voice of a genocide survivor into a compelling diplomatic presence on the international stage.
Tekkal had previously drawn attention during a session of the United Nations Security Council, where she raised direct and forthright questions regarding the international community’s failure to adequately address the crimes committed by Islamic State against the Yazidi people. Her intervention renewed global focus on the genocide and the urgent need for accountability.
From Documentation to Political Action
Tekkal began her career as a journalist and documentary filmmaker, concentrating on documenting the violations committed against the Yazidis. She later transitioned into political engagement in Germany within the ranks of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU).
Her political work centres on advocating for refugee rights and advancing genocide cases before parliaments and international institutions, helping to bridge the gap between survivors and European policymakers. Her documentary work has also served as a tool for legal and moral advocacy, contributing to calls for accelerated prosecutions and justice for victims, many of whom continue to endure the long-term consequences of the atrocities.
Coordination for a Strong Presence in Munich
Tekkal revealed via her social media platforms that she had been in direct contact with conference organisers to facilitate the participation of Mazloum Abdi and Ilham Ahmed. The initiative sought to ensure that Kurdish and Yazidi perspectives were represented in Western security discussions, where regional issues are often debated without the direct involvement of those most affected.
Their participation comes at a sensitive moment in international politics, as the Munich conference remains a key platform where global strategic interests intersect. The inclusion of figures associated with the Yazidi cause is widely viewed as a measure of the international community’s commitment to advancing transitional justice efforts in the Middle East.
