Iraq's Supreme Judicial Council Completes Initial Interrogations of Over 500 IS Detainees

Iraq's Supreme Judicial Council announced on Monday that initial interrogations have been completed for more than 500 Islamic State (IS) detainees transferred from Syrian prisons to Iraq. The Council stated that the total number of detainees has reached 5,704, representing 61 different nationalities.

According to a statement issued by the Supreme Judicial Council's Media Office, the Chief of Baghdad/Karkh Court of Appeals, Khalid al-Mashhadani, accompanied by the First Investigative Judge of the Karkh Court, Ali Hussein Jafat, conducted a field visit to the designated investigation site for IS detainees transferred from Syrian prisons.

The visit aimed to monitor the progress of legal and investigative procedures.

The statement added that the First Karkh Investigative Court has so far completed initial interrogations of more than 500 detainees. In addition, 157 juveniles under the age of 18 have been separated, and their cases have been referred to the Karkh Juvenile Investigation Court. They will be placed in juvenile rehabilitation centres to ensure they are treated in accordance with legal and humanitarian standards.

The Council confirmed that the total number of defendants currently stands at 5,704, belonging to 61 different nationalities.

U.S. Central Command announced last Friday the completion of the 23-day operation to transfer IS members from Syria to Iraq. The operation, which began on 21 January, resulted in the transfer of more than 5,700 ISIS detainees from Syrian detention facilities to Iraqi authorities.

Iraq's state media (INA) quoted Ministry of Justice spokesman Ahmed Laibi as stating that the total number of detainees stands at 5,703 from 61 countries, of whom, 4,253 are Arabs and 983 are non-Arab foreign nationals. He noted that 467 are Iraqi citizens, while 3,543 are Syrians.

Laibi explained that facilities at Karkh Central Prison have been renovated and that the detainees have been classified using a database provided to Iraq by the Global Coalition against IS, which includes Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Ukraine, India, Australia, Belgium, Georgia and Denmark.

He added that the largest numbers of detainees came from Morocco (187), Turkmenistan (165), Türkiye (181), Tunisia (234), Russia (130) and Egypt (116).
