Removal of radioactive contamination by decontamination teams.
Iraq's The National Commission for Nuclear, Radiological, Chemical and Biological Control announced on Sunday the implementation of radiation decontamination operations at one of the pillars of Al-Tobji Bridge in Baghdad.
In a press release, the Commission stated: “Under the direct supervision and field monitoring of the National Authority for Nuclear, Radiological, Chemical, and Biological Regulation, the relevant bodies continue work to address radioactive contamination detected in one of the bridge’s pillars. The removal operations are being carried out by the Iraqi Atomic Energy Authority through its Directorate of Radioactive Waste and Nuclear Facility Decommissioning.”
The commission added that it is overseeing the operation through its Directorate of Nuclear and Radiological Emergencies to ensure full compliance with radiation safety requirements and approved technical procedures, in line with national and international standards.
Mohammed Jassim Mohammed, Director of the Nuclear and Radiological Emergencies Directorate, stated that field measures included isolating and cordoning off the site with warning tape, restricting access to authorised personnel only, and implementing preventive steps to limit the spread of contamination.
He explained that the response teams used specialised insulating materials and established a secure working environment to protect technical staff during the removal process.
The commission confirmed that field supervision will continue until the contamination is fully removed and the site is restored to a safe condition, stressing that all procedures are being carried out to ensure the safety of citizens, workers, and the surrounding environment.
