The European Commission has stated that it will accept no increase in U.S. tariffs beyond the levels previously agreed in transatlantic trade arrangements, emphasizing that existing commitments must be respected.
EU officials stressed that “a deal is a deal,” underscoring Brussels’ expectation that Washington will adhere to the tariff framework negotiated between the two sides. The statement follows a recent ruling by the Supreme Court of the United States concerning the scope of U.S. executive authority over tariff measures.
According to EU representatives, any unilateral increase in tariffs would undermine trust, disrupt markets, and damage economic stability on both sides of the Atlantic. The European Commission reiterated its preference for dialogue and cooperation but signaled that it is prepared to defend European economic interests if necessary.
Trade relations between the European Union and the United States remain among the largest in the world, with billions of euros in goods and services exchanged annually. However, tariff disputes in recent years have periodically strained ties.
Brussels has called for clarity from Washington following the court ruling and reaffirmed its commitment to a rules-based international trading system.
