Rifaat Abdullah.
Mr Rifaat Abdullah, Vice President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), has issued a message marking the anniversary of the Spring Uprising, underlining that safeguarding its achievements depends upon unity and cohesion.
The full message reads:
“We recall with immense pride the great uprising of our people in the spring of 1991. On 5 March, Rania lit the spark of this historic transformation. On 7 March, Sulaymaniyah signalled the dawn of freedom for Kurdistan. On 11 March, the people of Erbil rose up, calling for justice and the overthrow of the Ba’ath regime. And on 20 March, Kirkuk crowned the uprising with the mantle of liberation.
As a decisive turning point, the uprising brought the Kurdish people back from the brink of destruction and certain extinction, restoring them to the stage of history. Through the steadfastness and determination of our people, Kurdistan entered a phase of self-governance and secured substantial gains. Today, we preserve the noble values of that uprising through unity and solidarity.
On this historic occasion, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to our people, pay tribute to the heroic Peshmerga, and bow in respect before the eternal memory of our martyrs.”
Rifaat Abdullah
Deputy President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan
