Remembering Kurdish Uprising: The Day Bazian Stood Against Dictatorship

Today, 6 March 2026, marks the 35th anniversary of the uprising by the people of Bazian town of Sulaymaniyah and its surrounding areas.

Thirty-five years have passed since the uprising of Bazian’s residents—one day after the uprising in Ranya, widely regarded as the gateway to the Kurdish uprising.

The people of Bazian rose up against the oppression of the Ba'ath Party regime in the region and helped bring down the pillars of dictatorship. Soon afterwards, other cities—including Sulaymaniyah, Erbil, Duhok and Kirkuk, also joined the uprising, bringing an end to the oppression of the Ba’athist fascist regime.

It is worth noting that the progress of the uprising in Bazian played a significant role in the success of the uprising in Sulaymaniyah and helped pave the way for uprisings in other areas.

The liberation of Bazian also prevented the army and security forces of the Ba’athist regime from retreating along the main road between Sulaymaniyah and Kirkuk. This was part of the broader military plan organised by the Kurdistan Front to carry out coordinated uprisings across the cities of Kurdistan.
