Iraq's National Security Advisory's meeting the heads of diplomatic missions in the country.
Qasim al-Araji, Iraq’s National Security Adviser, stressed on Sunday the importance of diplomatic missions remaining in Iraq and continuing their work normally.
According to a statement issued by the media office of the National Security Advisory, a copy of which was received by PUKMEDIA, the Advisory held a meeting with the ambassadors of the member states of the European Union accredited to Iraq, as well as the EU ambassador. The meeting was attended by al-Araji and officials from the National Security Advisory.
The statement said the meeting included a detailed briefing on the measures taken by the Iraqi government to secure embassies and diplomatic missions operating in Iraq. It also reaffirmed Iraq’s position rejecting any attack on diplomatic missions or embassies within the country.
The participants also discussed the directive issued by Iraq's Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces to pursue all those involved in targeting embassies and diplomatic missions in Iraq and to take legal action against them.
The statement further noted that Iraq’s position on the ongoing war in the Middle East was clarified during the meeting, emphasising that the country is not a party to the conflict. Iraq, it said, continues to pursue a neutral policy aimed at maintaining stability and advancing development achieved in recent years with the support of its partners and friends in the international community.
During the meeting, al-Araji stressed the importance of the continued presence of diplomatic missions in Iraq and their ability to carry out their work normally. He also noted that Iraq’s political forces remain committed to completing the remaining constitutional requirements to support the democratic process in the country.
For their part, the ambassadors of the EU member states stated that the European Union is not a party to the ongoing war in the Middle East. They expressed their appreciation to the Iraqi government for ensuring the protection of embassies and consulates in the country.
The ambassadors also condemned the targeting of the Kurdistan Region and other important sites in Iraq, expressing hope that Iraq would not be drawn into the current conflict.
The statement concluded that the meeting ended with an agreement to continue holding meetings with ambassadors and representatives of diplomatic missions operating in Iraq in order to exchange views and review current developments and challenges, with the aim of supporting stability in Iraq and the wider region.
