16 March Marks Anniversary of the Halabja Chemical Attack.
On the 38th anniversary of the Halabja chemical attack, Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), issued a statement urging the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the Iraqi government to provide greater services to the residents of the city and to continue its reconstruction.
The statement reads as follows:
Each year on this day, with deep respect and loyalty, and with hearts filled with sorrow and grief, we commemorate the tragedy of the chemical attack on the martyred city of Halabja.
The martyrs of Halabja, along with all the victims among our people, will forever remain in our memory. At this moment, we stand with pride beside Halabja and its people, and together we will work to secure a more prosperous future for our nation.
The PUK regards serving Halabja as a continuing responsibility. To ease the suffering caused by this great tragedy and the loss of our loved ones, both the KRG and the Iraqi government must provide even greater support and services to this beloved city, so that together we may transform its pain into hope, recovery, and further rebuilding.
We regret that this year, due to the war and the difficult circumstances in the region, official ceremonies worthy of the martyrs of Halabja will not be held. Nevertheless, Halabja remains a wound in the heart of our people and will forever be remembered.
A salute to the pure souls of the martyrs of Halabja and to all the martyrs of our people.
Bafel Jalal Talabani
President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan
