Halabja: A Symbol of Kurdish Suffering and Peace, Says Qubad Talabani

Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, stated that Halabja stands as both a symbol of Kurdish oppression and a beacon of peace.

Marking the 38th anniversary of the Halabja chemical attack, Talabani emphasised the need for unity in confronting the dangers and conflicts facing the Region.

His statement reads:

Each year, as we recall the tragedy of Halabja on 16 March, we are reminded of a chapter in Kurdish history. Halabja represents the oppression endured by the Kurdish people, who have long been subjected to injustice and attempts at their eradication.

It is also a testament to Kurdish resilience. Neither chemical attacks, nor genocide, nor bombings, nor any form of aggression or cruelty have been able to break the determination of the Kurdish people. The Kurds will not yield to anyone and remain steadfast in striving to secure their rights.

Halabja symbolises unity as well, highlighting the silence of the world in the face of such a great tragedy. It reminds us of the importance of building friendships globally, yet ultimately, we are each other’s true support.

Furthermore, Halabja is a symbol of peace and peaceful thinking for the Kurdish people. It is no accident that it is now regarded as the capital of peace in Kurdistan. Despite the enormity of the tragedy and the injustices suffered, the Kurds have chosen reconciliation over revenge, pursuing peace to resolve their challenges.

Today, as we mark the 38th anniversary of the chemical attack on Halabja, conflict and tension continue to affect the region. It is our responsibility to unite in safeguarding our country from threats, while also sharing Halabja’s message of peace and the enduring peaceful spirit of the Kurdish people with the world.
