The United States has reportedly shifted its approach to Cuba’s energy supply situation after allowing a Russian oil tanker to continue its journey to the island, despite long-standing restrictions aimed at limiting fuel deliveries.
According to reports, the tanker—carrying hundreds of thousands of barrels of crude oil—was permitted to reach Cuban waters and proceed to port. The decision marks a notable departure from previous U.S. policy, which had sought to tighten pressure on Havana by restricting external energy shipments.
The move has been described as a reversal of course, with President Donald Trump indicating that he had “no problem” with the delivery going ahead, citing concerns over Cuba’s worsening energy shortages and widespread power disruptions. At the same time, he maintained criticism of the Cuban government’s policies.
The shipment, linked to Russia, comes at a time of heightened geopolitical tension, with Moscow continuing to expand its energy and diplomatic ties with countries facing Western sanctions. Cuba, meanwhile, has been grappling with severe fuel shortages that have contributed to rolling blackouts and economic strain.
The decision not to intercept the vessel is being viewed by analysts as a significant, if limited, easing of the U.S. approach in this instance, raising questions about the consistency of Washington’s enforcement of its broader sanctions policy.
