The U.S. Embassy Baghdad on Monday issued a security alert warning that armed groups continue to pose a threat to U.S. citizens and facilities associated with the United States across Iraq, including the Iraqi Kurdistan Region.
In its statement, the embassy said some actors linked to the Iraqi government continue to provide political, financial and operational support to these groups.
The mission noted that Iraqi airspace has reopened and limited commercial flights have resumed. However, it cautioned U.S. citizens considering travel within Iraq to remain aware of continuing risks posed by missiles, drones and rockets.
The embassy said U.S. Mission Iraq remains operational under an ordered departure status to assist American citizens, but urged individuals not to travel to the embassy in Baghdad or the Consulate General in Erbil due to significant security risks.
It reiterated the existing Level 4 travel advisory for Iraq, advising U.S. citizens not to travel to the country and urging those currently in Iraq to leave when it is safe to do so.
The statement added that overland routes to Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye remain open, although travellers should expect delays and possible disruptions.
Routine consular services in Iraq, including visa services, remain suspended, while emergency assistance continues to be available for U.S. citizens through embassy and consulate channels.
