Kobani Mayor Almaz Romi.
Kobani Mayor Almaz Romi has announced that hundreds of Kurdish families have registered to obtain identity documents, as the registration process continues in Kobani.
According to Romi, approximately 300 Kurdish families have so far registered for citizenship, with the process ongoing for more than a month.
She noted that during the rule of the Ba'ath Party in Syria, many Kurds were left without official documentation. As a result, unregistered individuals faced significant obstacles, including limited access to education and the inability to register property in their own names.
Thousands of Kurds were deprived of citizenship during that period and were officially classified as “foreigners” or maktum, effectively denying them basic civil rights.
Romi added that guaranteeing the rights of the Kurdish people and recognising their existence formed part of the 29 January agreement between the Syrian Democratic Forces and the Syrian interim government.
