Trump–Xi Jinping Summit Set For Beijing Talks Amid Global Tensions.
U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are expected to meet on 14–15 May 2026 in Beijing, in what is set to be one of the most significant diplomatic engagements between the two powers this year.
The meeting forms part of a postponed state visit by President Trump to China, which was delayed earlier amid heightened global tensions, including instability in the Middle East. The White House has confirmed that preparations for the visit are now underway.
Trade, security and global tensions on the agenda
The upcoming summit is expected to focus on a wide range of sensitive issues, including trade relations, tariffs, technology restrictions, Taiwan, and broader geopolitical security concerns.
Both Washington and Beijing have faced ongoing economic and strategic disagreements in recent years, particularly over semiconductor technology, supply chains, and military activity in the Asia-Pacific region. Analysts say the meeting will be a crucial opportunity to ease tensions or, at minimum, establish clearer lines of communication.
Efforts to stabilise relations
The summit comes at a time when both countries have expressed interest in preventing further deterioration in bilateral relations, despite continued rivalry. Diplomatic sources suggest that both sides are aiming to manage competition while avoiding direct confrontation.
The meeting is also seen as part of wider efforts to stabilise global markets and reduce uncertainty, particularly as tensions remain elevated in some regions, including the Middle East.
