The Iraqi government has strongly condemned the recent attacks targeting the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, stressing that it will not tolerate any attempts to undermine Iraq’s sovereignty or damage relations with neighbouring countries.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, 19 May 2020, government spokesperson Basim al-Awadi said Iraq “reaffirms its firm and historical stance on the distinguished and enduring relations between the brotherly and friendly countries of the region,” and its commitment to the security of Arab states. He emphasised the importance of supporting stability, de-escalation efforts, and preventing attacks regardless of their source.
The statement added that Iraq condemns the drone attacks targeting Saudi Arabia and remains committed to joint efforts aimed at strengthening regional security and safeguarding the sovereignty and stability of regional states.
Al-Awadi noted that although Iraqi military authorities had not detected or recorded any specific information related to Iraqi airspace, relevant institutions stand ready to cooperate in investigating any information linked to the incident. He reiterated Iraq’s categorical rejection of the use of its territory, airspace, or waters to launch aggression against neighbouring countries.
He further stressed that Iraqi security forces have taken all necessary measures to prevent and expose any attempts of this nature, adding that there would be “no leniency” towards anyone who threatens Iraq’s sovereignty or damages relations with Saudi Arabia or other neighbouring and friendly states.
In a separate statement, the Iraqi government also strongly condemned the drone attacks targeting the UAE, reaffirming its full support for efforts to enhance security and stability in the region.
The statement reiterated Iraq’s commitment to maintaining strong fraternal relations and a constructive partnership with the UAE, as well as supporting cooperation that serves mutual Arab interests and the broader stability of the region. It also highlighted the importance of regional and international cooperation to prevent escalation and safeguard the security and sovereignty of friendly and neighbouring countries.
