The Athens Defence Forum is set to be held in Sulaymaniyah for the first time this November, under the chairmanship of Qubad Talabani and organised by the Slemani Strategic Forum. The event is expected to build upon and further expand discussions initiated during the Athens forum.
The Athens Defence Forum began yesterday, Wednesday, 20 May 2026, in the Greek capital, with wide participation from leading political and security figures, as well as experts and stakeholders from the Kurdistan Region, Iraq and a number of countries worldwide.
On the second day of the conference, a panel discussion entitled “The Future of the Middle East in the Current Dangerous Situation” was held, featuring a number of prominent figures from across the region.
Following the session, it was announced that the next edition of the forum would take place in Sulaymaniyah under the chairmanship of Qubad Talabani, reinforcing the city’s growing role as an international centre for strategic and critical dialogue on regional and global affairs.
The forum provides a platform for decision-makers and specialists in the defence and security sectors to engage in serious discussions on major global challenges. This year’s discussions focus on geopolitical transformations, technological developments, and the evolving nature of future conflicts and actors.
Held under the patronage of the Greek Ministry of National Defence, the Athens Defence Forum is regarded as a high-level independent platform dedicated to strategic dialogue on defence issues, the evolution of warfare, and efforts to limit the spread and changing dynamics of conflicts.
