Iraq's Ministry of Justice announced on Monday a significant legal victory after successfully defending Iraq in an international arbitration case, saving the state approximately $800 million in potential damages.
According to an official statement of the ministry obtained by PUKMEDIA, the International Arbitration Tribunal dismissed all claims brought forward by the telecommunications firm Orange against the Republic of Iraq and the Communications and Media Commission.
The Ministry attributed the success to the rigorous and sustained efforts of its Legal Department, which robustly defended Iraq’s position before the international panel, noting that the ruling significantly bolsters the protection of public funds and safeguards the state's institutional interests on the global stage.
"This achievement is the fruit of the continuous legal efforts exerted by the Legal Department... thus strengthening the protection of public funds and safeguarding the rights of the state," the Ministry stated.
Furthermore, the tribunal ordered Orange to reimburse Iraq $10 million to cover legal fees and associated expenses. The Ministry highlighted this cost award as a testament to the strength of Iraq's legal arguments and the efficiency with which the case was managed to secure a outcome serving the national interest.
