Peshmerga Minister Announces Completion of Unification and Reorganisation Process

The Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Ministry of Peshmerga announced today that the process of unifying and reorganising the Peshmerga forces under the Ministry’s umbrella has been completed, describing the achievement as a historic milestone and a long-awaited step towards building a unified and modern military force.
Peshmerga Minister Shorsh Ismail said the completion of the process was a historic achievement and long-awaited development, noting that the unification and reorganisation of the Peshmerga forces had been accomplished after years of sustained efforts.
He explained that the process was carried out by the Ministry of Peshmerga in cooperation and coordination with the commands of Forces 70 and 80, which supported the process and helped overcome longstanding obstacles and challenges.
Ismail said the Ministry had devoted all its resources and capabilities to the success of the national undertaking, which was implemented in accordance with a comprehensive and carefully prepared military plan. The plan resulted in the unification and reorganisation of Forces 70 and 80 under a single military structure.
According to the statement, the reform and reorganisation process covered brigades, divisions and regional commands, bringing all forces under a unified system of command and control within the Ministry of Peshmerga.
The Peshmerga Minister also confirmed the official commencement of operations by the two military regional commands, describing the step as the foundation for building a unified and modern army in the Kurdistan Region operating under the direct command of the Ministry of Peshmerga.
He noted that the achievement was made possible through the direct and continued support of the President of the Kurdistan Region, the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister, as well as the pivotal role of the US-led Global Coalition forces under the framework of the joint memorandum of understanding.
