U.S. Presidential Envoy to Iraq Tom Barrack confirmed on Tuesday that President Donald Trump is looking forward to hosting Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi at the White House in mid-July to discuss the future of relations between the two countries.
According to a statement issued by the Iraqi Prime Minister’s Media Office, Prime Minister al-Zaidi and U.S. Presidential Envoy Tom Barrack have reaffirmed the shared commitment of the Iraqi government, led by Prime Minister al-Zaidi, and the United States administration, led by President Trump, to strengthening a robust and mutually beneficial partnership between Iraq and the United States- a partnership is capable of fulfilling the aspirations of the Iraqi people for a future marked by sovereignty, security and prosperity, while delivering tangible benefits to both the Iraqi and American peoples.
The statement said Barrack conveyed President Trump’s anticipation of welcoming al-Zaidi to Washington for talks on the future of the bilateral relationship.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed the Iraqi government’s vision for building a stable future free from terrorism, including plans to disarm and dissolve all armed groups operating outside the authority of the state, restrict weapons to state control and strengthen Iraq’s sovereignty. They also stressed the importance of preventing Iraqi territory from being used to threaten regional peace and agreed on the urgent need to achieve these objectives.
Prime Minister al-Zaidi reiterated Iraq’s commitment to expanding trade and investment ties with the United States, a position welcomed by Barrack. Both sides also praised Iraq’s decision to finalise an operating licence for Starlink, enabling the company to provide internet services in Iraq.
The discussions further addressed plans for negotiations with Chevron on the development of the West Qurna-2 and Nasiriyah oil fields, as well as the resumption of operations by U.S. energy companies HKN, WesternZagros and Hunt under full security guarantees.
The statement also highlighted progress on a memorandum of understanding with TI Capital concerning the rehabilitation of the Kirkuk–Banias pipeline as a key oil export route.
In addition, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation in the energy sector, including support for Iraq’s electricity needs through projects such as Excelerate Energy’s planned floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal at Khor al-Zubair.
The statement concluded by emphasising the importance of supporting a strong, united, sovereign, democratic and federal Iraq founded on constitutional institutions and equal rights for all citizens, with the aim of enhancing the country’s stability, unity and prosperity.
