Yanar Mohammed was one of Iraq’s most prominent women’s rights activists and founder of the country’s first shelters for survivors of domestic violence and trafficking.
A ceremony will be held in Sulaymaniyah on 21 June 2026 to commemorate Yanar Mohammed, the prominent Iraqi women's rights activist who was assassinated in Baghdad earlier this year.
In a joint statement, the Organization of Women's Freedom in Iraq and the Organization of Communist Alternative in Iraq announced that they will organise a memorial event in honour of Yanar Mohammed, describing her as "an icon of the struggle for women's liberation and a courageous leader."
Yanar Mohammed was assassinated at her home in Baghdad on the morning of 2 March 2026.
Born in Baghdad in 1960, Mohammed was one of Iraq's most prominent advocates for women's rights. She studied architecture and obtained a master's degree from the University of Baghdad.
She became actively involved in women's rights advocacy during the 1990s and went on to found the Women's Freedom Organization, which played a leading role in defending women's rights and promoting gender equality in Iraq.
