The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has welcomed Iraq's recent efforts to combat corruption, saying the government's measures to recover stolen assets are moving in the right direction, although further action is still required.
Speaking to Iraq's state media (INA) on Sunday, Yama Turabi, Director of the UNDP's Combating Corruption and Promoting Integrity project, said the Iraqi government, together with the Supreme Judicial Council and other relevant institutions, had made significant progress in tackling corruption.
Turabi noted that while asset recovery efforts remain incomplete, the issue has become a key government priority aimed at recovering misappropriated public funds and assets.
"We have recently observed encouraging progress in the government's approach to recovering stolen funds and assets," he said.
However, he stressed that additional work is needed to strengthen the recovery process. He pointed to recommendations contained in the Prosecution Follow-up Programme report, which identified more than 12 areas requiring procedural improvements to enhance asset recovery.
Turabi said achieving lasting results would require decisive action, beginning with the development of a clear strategy to implement the approved mechanisms effectively.
He praised the Iraqi government's efforts to combat corruption and recover stolen assets, reaffirming the UNDP's readiness to support these initiatives by providing technical expertise and capacity-building assistance.
