Iraqi PM Pledges Crackdown on Corruption and State Monopoly on Weapons

Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi has reaffirmed his government's commitment to tackling corruption, describing the current campaign as only "the first step" in a broader programme of reforms. He also vowed to recover misappropriated public funds and ensure that weapons remain exclusively under state control.

Speaking during the eighth Cabinet meeting on Sunday, 28 June 2026, al-Zaidi said the government would pursue everyone involved in the theft of public funds, urging anyone in possession of state money to return it. He stressed that public wealth must be restored to its rightful owners.

The Prime Minister said he had been entrusted by the Iraqi people to fulfil their aspirations and build the country, adding that he bears responsibility for protecting citizens' interests and security. He pledged not to remain silent in the face of corruption or any action that undermines the public interest.

Al-Zaidi declared that Iraq is entering a new phase in which the state alone will possess weapons and exercise the legitimate use of force. He insisted that no corrupt official would enjoy immunity under his administration, adding that he was prepared to make personal sacrifices for the country's benefit. He also stated that he has no intention of seeking re-election, saying his priority is to address what he described as "unacceptable" conditions.

The Prime Minister instructed oversight bodies to receive reports concerning the performance of government institutions and ministries in order to expose corruption and negligence. He noted that Iraq has endured years of war, instability and the fight against terrorism, but said the government's current approach is focused on strengthening state institutions, reinforcing the state's monopoly on arms, and preventing corrupt individuals from exploiting public office for personal gain.

Al-Zaidi also announced that preparations are under way for next year's budget, which will follow a programme-based budgeting model. He said greater investment would be directed towards the electricity sector, enabling contracts for an additional 25,000 megawatts of generating capacity this year, with the aim of significantly improving the national power grid next year.

He added that the government's One Million Residential Plots initiative is progressing under close supervision and will be completed as quickly as possible. The Cabinet approved the scheme as a national strategic project to provide serviced residential land in all Iraqi governorates, with the exception of the Kurdistan Region, for distribution to eligible citizens.

Concluding his remarks, al-Zaidi sought to reassure the public, saying: "Rest assured, there are trustworthy guardians protecting your interests and your funds."
