An agreement between Washington and Tehran.
Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majid al-Ansari has announced that Qatari and Pakistani mediators have concluded separate meetings in Doha with US and Iranian negotiators.
In a post on X, al-Ansari said: "Qatari and Pakistani mediators concluded separate meetings in Doha with American and Iranian negotiators, where positive progress was made on issues related to the memorandum of understanding signed in Islamabad, based on the outcomes of the Lucerne Summit."
He added that the parties had agreed to continue discussions in the coming period, with the date of the next round of talks to be set as soon as possible after the funeral ceremonies for the former Iranian Supreme Leader.
Indirect technical talks between US and Iranian officials, facilitated by mediators, began in Doha on Wednesday as part of diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions following the recent exchange of strikes between the two countries. Since mid-June, Washington and Tehran have been engaged in negotiations under a 60-day, renewable memorandum of understanding brokered by Pakistan and Qatar. The talks are aimed at ending the conflict that followed the US-Israeli attack on Iran on 28 February.
Following their exchange of attacks over control of the Strait of Hormuz, the United States and Iran announced on Tuesday that they would send officials to Qatar to begin implementing the terms of the memorandum of understanding.
The agreement includes several key provisions, among them a ceasefire across all fronts, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, the lifting of the US blockade on Iranian ports, the release of part of Iran's frozen assets, and negotiations towards a comprehensive settlement within the 60-day period, with the option of an extension.
Axios cited a US official as saying: "We reached an understanding in Doha to keep things calm during the coming week to allow for progress on all aspects of the memorandum of understanding."
US President Donald Trump also welcomed the progress made during Wednesday's negotiations, describing the discussions as "very good meetings" between the two sides.
Speaking to reporters, Trump said: "Based on how things are going, the denuclearisation of Iran is going very well. They've had very good meetings, and we'll see what happens." He added: "We hit them very hard... but we get along very well."
