Iraqi and Turkish delegations meet in Ankara.
An Iraqi delegation, comprising representatives from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Oil, alongside the Kurdistan Regional Government’s Ministry of Natural Resources, visited the Turkish capital, Ankara, on Wednesday and Thursday to discuss the future of the Iraq–Türkiye pipeline agreement and prospects for cooperation in the oil and energy sectors.
According to a statement from the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the visit included a series of negotiations and technical meetings involving experts from both sides. The Iraqi delegation included senior officials from the Ministry of Oil and the KRG Ministry of Natural Resources, while the Turkish delegation was made up of officials and specialists from the Turkish Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources.
The Iraqi delegation—comprising Deputy Foreign Minister Ambassador Mohammed Hussein Bahr Al-Uloom, Deputy Oil Minister Nasir Al-Hindawi, and Ambassador Majid Al-Lajmawi—also met with Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar.
The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation in the energy sector and exploring mechanisms to ensure the continued export of Iraqi oil in a way that serves the interests of both countries.
Both sides agreed to maintain coordination and continue technical and legal consultations. They also expressed hope that the next phase would lead to the signing of an executive protocol to ensure the continued export of Iraqi oil, including crude from the Kurdistan Region. The protocol is expected to serve as a transitional arrangement ahead of a new bilateral agreement, which the two sides aim to conclude within one year of the current agreement’s expiry.
