Kurdistan Region Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani has welcomed the decision to rename Sulaymaniyah International Airport as Jalal Talabani International Airport, describing it as a fitting tribute to the late President Jalal Talabani’s lifelong service to Kurdistan, democracy and peaceful coexistence.
In a statement, Talabani noted that President Mam Jalal had never wished for places to be named after him during his lifetime. Nevertheless, he expressed his gratitude to the President Jalal Talabani Foundation, as well as all the individuals and relevant authorities in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq who supported the initiative.
Talabani said the renaming reflects respect and appreciation for Mam Jalal’s nearly 70 years of struggle and dedication to the cause of Kurdistan, freedom, democracy and coexistence.
He also highlighted that Sulaymaniyah International Airport was established under Mam Jalal’s leadership, making it especially meaningful that the institution he helped found now bears his name as Jalal Talabani International Airport.
