Rodent-borne virus claims three lives in Venezuela.
Venezuelan health authorities have confirmed that three people have died from hantavirus in the eastern state of Anzoátegui, prompting an epidemiological investigation and heightened surveillance in affected communities.
The Ministry of Health announced on Tuesday that the three confirmed victims were members of the same family living in a rural area. Officials are also investigating two additional deaths in the western state of Barinas to determine whether they were linked to the virus.
Health authorities stressed that the confirmed infections appear to be isolated cases and said there is no evidence of sustained person-to-person transmission in Venezuela.
Medical teams have been deployed to the affected areas to identify anyone who may have been exposed, monitor potential new cases and strengthen disease surveillance. Public health officials are also investigating the likely source of the infections and have urged residents to take precautions to reduce contact with rodents.
Hantavirus is a rare but potentially life-threatening disease carried by rodents. People usually become infected by inhaling airborne virus particles released from the urine, droppings or saliva of infected rodents, particularly in rural environments, abandoned buildings or areas where rodents are common.
The virus does not normally spread between people. However, the Andes virus, a strain found in parts of South America, is one of the few exceptions and has been associated with limited human-to-human transmission. Venezuelan authorities have said there is no indication that the current cases involve such transmission.
In the Americas, hantavirus can cause Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS), a severe respiratory disease that initially presents with symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, fatigue, headaches and nausea before rapidly progressing to breathing difficulties as fluid accumulates in the lungs. The illness has a high fatality rate, making early diagnosis and intensive medical care critical.
There is currently no specific antiviral treatment or approved vaccine for hantavirus. Medical care focuses on managing symptoms and providing respiratory support where necessary.
The latest deaths come just weeks after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared an outbreak of Andes hantavirus linked to the expedition cruise ship MV Hondius officially over. That outbreak resulted in several infections and three deaths but was successfully contained through international contact tracing, quarantine measures and close monitoring of passengers and crew.
